Janet Jensen took over as Honorary Treasurer (Director) of Basketball Northern Ireland (BNI) after a period of tumult in the company. The books were not up to date and there had not been an effective Treasurer in post for several months. Janet immediately set about sorting out the mess and with a few weeks had an intelligible set of accounts drawn up which could be stood over. To ensure the same situation would not arise, Janet drafted various financial procedures that were to be followed to control expenditure, ensure it had proper authorisation, and to enable effective management of the various accounts. She set up and chaired a separate finance committee reporting to the Board. In our dealings with Sport Northern Ireland (SNI), Janet’s procedures were scrutinised from time to time and were not found wanting, a matter, which greatly enhanced BNI’s standing with SNI, as the BNI Board of Directors tried to prove the organisational governance had improved. At its next funding application stage BNI’s governance rating, determined by SNI, had increased to almost 100% and its financial management was considered to be effective. Janet provided monthly updates to the Board in a clear and concise manner, which were easily understood and demonstrated the existing spend, but also drew attention to potential risks. Crucially for a body depending almost entirely on uninterrupted cash flow from Sport Northern Ireland, Janet highlighted where risks and issues were likely to arise should funds not be paid in when due and set out steps to develop a risk mitigation plan that could be implemented. Working with SNI can be challenging for any sporting body and SNI’s accountants can delay funding on the most minor of reasons. It is testimony to Janet’s ability and the working relationship she developed with that department, that the cash flow situation greatly improved during her time as Treasurer, Janet was sorely missed when she left office” Janet was Honorary Treasurer from May 2014 to April 2016
